Book: Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
“Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.” The title is a metaphor for how Ally feels in school. However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the troublemaker. With his help, Ally learns that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of and discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike. Using this feel-good story of friendship and acceptance, students will learn the skills and techniques for reading a text more deeply. Each day, students will read part of the novel and engage in a variety of activities to help them understand character and theme and delve into an analysis of literacy techniques.
