During term one of this HSC English Advanced course, students will be given a clear overview of the HSC English Advanced curriculum, and of their HSC examination for the subject. We will also set goals and sustainable study habits for the year ahead. In particular, the term will focus firstly on the all important Common Module, Texts and Human Experiences. This module is the foundation of English Advanced: it alone accounts for 40% of the HSC Examination. In order to succeed in this important module, students need to develop high-level conceptual analysis (that is, turning implicit material in your texts into meaningful ideas about human experiences) in regards to their prescribed, related, and unseen texts. In class, students will focus on: bringing implicit aspects of human experiences in texts to conceptual expression; extending their capacity to analyse a wide set of language and stylistic devices; making well structured responses under exam conditions. Homework will consist of exercises and critical readings to consolidate their knowledge of, and familiarity with, their prescribed texts. In class, we will make close readings of texts, including suggested related texts for this module, and targeted skills exercises for building effective analyses of the themes and concepts of your prescribed texts.
