Do you have a preschooler starting school next year? Do you want to set your child up for reading success? Then this is the program for you! Designed for 4-5 year olds with little-to-no prior reading instruction, this 8-week course in Term 4 will set a solid literacy foundation for your child's education. Based on the concepts of the Science of Reading, your child will be given systematic, synthetic phonics instruction with a focus on phonemic awareness and manipulation of sounds, using a fun, multi-sensory approach.
The Science of Reading refers to the overwhelming and conclusive body of evidence from research conducted across many languages and related disciplines that has analysed the way children learn to read. Researchers agree that reading instruction needs to be systematic, synthetic and phonics-based.
Unfortunately, literacy levels across Australia, and other parts of the world, have been dropping for years because of the 'Balanced Literacy' approach that is still taught in many of our local schools. This approach teaches students to use context and pictures as clues to help figure out words and phrases that they don't understand, while phonemic instruction is sporadic at best.
Even within schools beginning to teach Systematic Synthetic Phonics, the foundational skill of phonemic awareness (being able to hear the individual sounds in words and manipulate them to make a word) is skipped, and mapping sounds to letters is hurried.
This is why we at EduVision have chosen to follow the Science of Reading, with a big focus in each lesson on phonemic awareness, so that you can be confident your child is Ready to Read.
