Moving images are central to our culture. We laugh, we cry, we’re on the edge of our seats – but how do filmmakers make us have these reactions?
In this course, students will be introduced to the five essential fields that underpin filmmaking:
- Film techniques - shots, cuts, and montage
- Film design - mise-en-scene, lighting, production design
- Film history - from Steamboat Willy to Star Wars
- Film genres - rules and conventions, and when to break them
- Sound - music, dialogue, foley and more
Emphasis will be placed on discussion, collaboration and individual experience of film viewership. This course, while not exhaustive, will provide students with a peek behind the curtain into what makes films tick, and will greatly improve not only their ability to understand what they are watching on a technical level, but also to analyse it at school.
Students are encouraged to bring a camera (mobile phone is sufficient) to class so they can practise what they are learning.
