This course is designed to further develop skills and provide more practice for the Selective High Schools Placement Test.
For Reading:
- Intensive vocabulary enrichment
- Focus on each subsection of the Reading paper: fiction, poetry, cloze (subheadings & sentence gap-match, word fill-in-the-blank), linked extracts
- An in-class assessment on Day 5
- Enrichment and development of higher-order thinking skills
For Writing:
- Focus on different text types
- Daily writing task (except Day 5) with detailed feedback provided
Teaching Plan
Vocabulary is included in most lessons. The writing task (days 1–4 only) is teacher-marked, and other homework activities are self-marked. There is no homework on day 5.
Day 1: Genre revision, narrative comprehension and analysis, eyewitness account, text analysis
Day 2: Figurative language, poetry, paired texts comprehension, developing narrative setting
Day 3: Cloze: subheading and sentence gap-match, compare & contrast, letter of complaint, text analysis
Day 4: Cloze: word fill-in-the-blank, linked extracts, review, text analysis
Day 5: Mock reading test & review, vocabulary revision, cloze: subheading gap-match, writing creative similes, quick writes (responses to an image)
