This course is designed to prepare Year 5 students for scholarship exams offered by private and independent schools.
This course will include:
- Vocabulary enrichment with a focus on idioms
- Reading a range of genres and text types, including visual texts
- Text analysis to support both reading and writing
- Activities that focus on higher-order thinking skills
- A daily writing task (except Day 5) with detailed feedback
- A reading mock test on Day 5.
Teaching Plan
Vocabulary is included in most lessons. The writing task (days 1–4 only) is teacher-marked, and other homework activities are self-marked. There is no homework on day 5.
Day 1: Narrative: structure and types of conflict, making inferences, narrative comprehension
Day 2: Inferring theme, symbolism, poetry and visual text comprehension, developing a narrative setting, text analysis
Day 3: Persuasive writing: parts of a persuasive essay, text analysis persuasive and narrative text comprehension
Day 4: Speech: rhetorical techniques, text analysis, visual text and non-fiction comprehension
Day 5: Mock reading test and review, planning and reviewing (editing and proofreading), tackling hybrid writing tasks, purple prose
