This course is designed to foster a love for language through interactive and age-appropriate activities. Students will engage in reading and writing exercises that promote language development and comprehension across a range of text types, such as information reports, narratives, opinion pieces and news articles. The weekly writing task is based on the reading activities, allowing students the opportunity to practise what they've learnt, thus building essential skills for effective comprehension and communication. This course assists in the preparation for ICAS and the Opportunity Class Placement Test.

Week 1: Symbolism, Gothic literature, poetry comprehension, second person point-of-view, text analysis and comprehension, grammar – contractions
Week 2: Information reports, topic sentences, grammar – active and passive voice, text coherence, cloze – sentences & subheadings, text analysis and comprehension
Week 3: Narrative comprehension, compare and contrast – signal words & text structure, text analysis, non-fiction comprehension, connectives – word fill-in-the-blank
Week 4: Persuasive writing, poetry comprehension, fact and opinion, purpose and audience, logical fallacies, word fill-in-the-blank, text analysis, narrative comprehension, proofreading
Week 5: PEEL paragraph structure, refutation, text analysis and comprehension, poetry comprehension, editing
Week 6: Word fill-in-the-blank, triangle of rhetoric, speech vs writing, text analysis and comprehension, identifying the main idea
Week 7: Poetry comprehension, punctuation of quotes, feature articles – structure and features, text analysis, word fill-in-the-blank
Week 8: Paired texts comprehension, spelling, editing and proofreading, advertisement – features and structure (problem – agitate – solve), text analysis, cloze – subheadings, non-fiction comprehension
Week 9: Reading and writing assessments & review, sensory imagery, vocabulary revision, fiction comprehension
