This course is designed to foster a love for language through interactive and age-appropriate activities. Students will engage in reading and writing exercises that promote language development and comprehension across a range of text types, such as information reports, narratives, opinion pieces and news articles. The weekly writing task is based on the reading activities, allowing students the opportunity to practise what they've learnt, thus building essential skills for effective comprehension and communication. This course assists in the preparation for ICAS and the Opportunity Class Placement Test.
Course objectives
Week 1: Adverbs, identifying the main idea, cloze – subheadings, sensory imagery, fiction and non-fiction comprehension and analysis, paired texts comprehension
Week 2: Verbs, building vocabulary, vocabulary in context, word fill-in-the-blank, narrative comprehension, identifying the main idea
Week 3: Inferring theme, narrative comprehension, writing preparation – supporting theme, non-fiction comprehension
Week 4: Word fill-in-the-blank, inferring character, narrative comprehension, writing dynamic and static characters, character profiles, cloze – subheadings
Week 5: Similes, setting, literary description – comprehension and analysis, cloze – sentence gap-match and subheadings
Week 6: Argument, persuasive writing and poetry comprehension, PEEL structure, brainstorming practice, cloze – sentence gap-match, word fill-in-the-blank
Week 7: Anecdotes, persuasive letters comprehension and analysis, letter format, cloze – sentence gap-match and subheadings, idioms
Week 8: Text structure, diary entries, text analysis, poetry and non-fiction comprehension
Week 9: Reading and writing assessments & review, acrostic poetry, cloze
Week 10: Vocabulary quiz, Gothic literature, sensory imagery, poetry analysis
