Year 4 English for OC

This course is tailored to prepare students for the OC Placement Test. Students will engage in a comprehensive exploration of texts, emphasising reading comprehension, critical thinking, and effective communication. The lessons integrate a range of literary genres to provide a dynamic and enriching learning experience. 

Course objectives

• Apply advanced reading comprehension strategies to interpret and analyse diverse texts independently.
• Develop critical thinking skills through literary analysis, inference, and interpretation of texts.

Teaching Plan
Vocabulary is included in most weeks. Homework tasks are self-marked. There is no homework in week 10.

Week 1: Procedures, summarising, cloze – subheadings & sentence gap-match, linked extracts, reading comprehension

Week 2: Compare and contrast, linked extracts, sequencing, word fill-in-the-blank, reading comprehension

Week 3: Narrative, inferring character, reading comprehension, linked extracts, cloze –sentence gap-match

Week 4: Poetic techniques, poetry analysis on subject, theme and tone, poetry comprehension, word fill-in-the-blank

Week 5: Mock test & review, predicting, paired texts comprehension, cloze – subheadings

Week 6: Identifying the main idea, flow of ideas, text structure, word fill-in-the-blank, cloze – subheadings & sentence gap-match, poetry comprehension

Week 7: Skill revision: making inferences, paired texts comprehension, word fill-in-the-blank, poetry comprehension, linked extracts

Week 8: Skill revision: summarising, cloze – subheadings & sentence gap-match, linked extracts, poetry comprehension

Week 9: Skill revision: poetic techniques, poetry comprehension, overall revision of skills and strategies
