This course is designed to foster a love for language through interactive and age-appropriate activities. Students will engage in reading and writing exercises that promote language development and comprehension across a range of text types, such as information reports, narratives, opinion pieces and news articles. The weekly writing task is based on the reading activities, allowing students the opportunity to practise what they've learnt, thus building essential skills for effective comprehension and communication.

• Develop reading comprehension skills, from locating and identifying information to interpreting and inferring from the text
• Express thoughts and ideas through creative and persuasive writing
• Improve spelling, grammar and punctuation
Teaching plan
Vocabulary is included in most weeks. Homework includes a writing task that is teacher-marked, and other activities that are self-marked. There is no homework in week 10.
Week 1: Revision of persuasive text features: fact and opinion, objective and subjective language, modality; reading comprehension
Week 2: Revision of persuasive text structure, reading comprehension, focus on the conclusion
Week 3: Types of persuasive texts, focus on book review, reading comprehension
Week 4: Persuasive speeches, differences between persuasive writing and persuasive speech, formal and informal language, analysing persuasive speeches
Week 5: Persuasive letters, letter layout, reading comprehension and analysis
Week 6: Inferring emotions; apology letter: purpose, features and structure; reading comprehension: letter and poem
Week 7: Tenses, reading comprehension: persuasive essay, poem, video
Week 8: Persuasive writing review, modality, short writing practice, reading comprehension: movie review, advice sheet, poem
Week 9: Reading and writing assessments & review, text purpose
Week 10: Comprehension and analysis: calendar, information text, recipe, visual narrative
