Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice (1813) is an undisputed classic of English literature, and an ideal 19th century novel for younger readers. The story of Elizabeth Bennet and her family's position explores themes of love, class, and social expectations, and Austen's remarkable prose style and insight into the world of Regency-era England continue to fascinate us. Our classes will involve close-reading of key passages from the novel, and study of Austen's context and influence. Assignments will include essay writing and short critical and analytical responses that examine the enduring appeal of Austen's themes, characterisation, and literary style.
Students are advised to read the text before the course begins. Students must have a copy of the novel ready for the course. You may purchase a copy from the office.
