Of all of Shakespeare’s histories, Henry V is perhaps the one that left the most indelible mark on English-speaking culture. Re-telling the famous English victory over the French at the Battle of Agincourt, this play asks fundamental questions about the way our culture relates to war. What does it say about us that victories on the battlefield are used to inspire a nation? In depicting such a 'glorious' moment of English military history for a patriotic audience, what did Shakespeare really think about the virtues and evils of war? The answer is complex, and we will dive right in!
At the same time, Henry V tells the story of a prodigal young prince thrown into power, speaking to universal concerns about politics and human nature. What makes a great leader? How can personality shape a sense of nationality? Are these ideas about leadership and the human condition applicable to us today? As we examine Shakespeare’s language and enjoy his story, we will strengthen our critical thinking and analytical skills in attempting to answer these questions together in discussion and on paper.
Students are expected to read the text before the class begins. The New Cambridge edition is recommended but any good academic version will do. Students may also wish to watch the 1989 Kenneth Branagh production of the play.
