HSC Chemistry

This course is an accelerated course aimed at year 11 students to help prepare them for HSC. This course follows the NSW Stage 6 Syllabus topics and dot points. This course will cover modules 5-8; Equilibrium and Acid Reactions, Acid/Base Reactions, Organic Chemistry, Applying Chemical Ideas. This course will teach students all the skills and content needed for internal HSC trial exams and external HSC exams. 

Term 1: Module 5 Equilibrium and Acid Reactions

• Model static and dynamic equilibriums
• Analyse non-equilibrium systems in terms of entropy and enthalpy
• Investigate collision theory and reaction rate in chemical equilibriums
• Investigating factors that affect equilibrium in relation to Le Chatelier’s principle
• Examining activation energy and heat of reaction affect equilibrium position
• Solubility rules, solubility equilibrium constants and predicting precipitates

Term 2: Module 6 Acid/Base Reactions

• Properties of inorganic acids and bases
• Properties of common inorganic acids and bases
• Prediction of products of acid reactions
• Neutralisation reactions and enthalpy of neutralisation
• Brønsted-Lowry theory
• Calculating pH, pOH, hydrogen ion concentration and hydroxide ion concentration
• Ionic equations and conjugate acid/base pairs
• Strong and weak vs concentrated and dilute
• Amphiprotic nature of salts
• Titration curves and conductivity graphs
• Dissociation constants
• Buffers

Term 3: Module 7 Organic Chemistry

• IUPAC nomenclature
• Structural isomers of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons
• Models, molecular formulae for homologous series of organic compounds
• Properties of homologous series
• Environmental, economic and sociocultural impact of hydrocarbons
• Reactions of hydrocarbons and substitution with halogens
• Oxidation, substitution and fermentation of alcohols and comparison to biofuels
• Investigating esters, soaps, detergents and reaction pathways
• Compare structure, properties of polymers including condensation polymers

Term 4: Module 8 Applying Chemical Ideas

• Flame, precipitation and complexation reactions for ions
• Gravimetric analysis and precipitation reactions
• Using colourimetry, UV spectrophotometry and AAS
• Tests for CC double bonds, Hydroxyl groups and carboxylic acids
• Qualitative analysis for CC double bonds, hydroxyl groups and carboxylic acids
• Analyse the structure of NMR, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy
• Evaluate factors needed for chemical synthesis process
