Australian Poets: Judith Wright and Oodgeroo Noonuccal
In this unit, we will read poems and prose by two of Australia's most famous modern poets, Judith Wright and Oodgeroo Noonuccal. Judith Wright's representations of the landscape of her childhood home (New England region, NSW) are some of her most beloved works: we will read these, as well as poems concerned with gender, politics and mythology. Oodgeroo of the Noonuccal people (formerly known as Kath Walker) came to prominence as a political poet during the 1960s, and her work confronts race relations in Australia, as well as Australian society's ideas of environment, family and spirituality. This unit will also explore the deep friendship between Oodgeroo and Wright and how this is reflected in their work.
