Shakespeare Study: The Comedy of Errors
In this course, students will read Shakespeare's early play The Comedy of Errors (1594). For students still familiarising themselves with Shakespeare, the play provides an excellent opportunity to delve into Shakespeare's puns and wordplay, as well as his use of mistaken identity and patterns of binary opposition, which are a hallmark of his style. Our close reading and analysis will provide students a strong understanding of the comedy genre and a foundation for appreciating Shakespeare's later, hybrid genre works such as The Tempest or The Winter's Tale. Assignments will include essay writing and creative responses on Shakespeare's language and style.
Students must have a copy of the book ready for the course. Any scholarly edition from Oxford, Arden and Penguin will suffice.
Students are advised to read the text before the course begins.
