A cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey remains one of the most iconic and influential texts ever written. Students will study this ancient masterpiece and analyse its form, language and subtext, as well as learning about how Odysseus' long journey home fits within the broader canon of the Epic Cycle and Greek mythology. Classes will explore the role of the gods in Greek life and spirituality, the text's commentaries on morality, wisdom and hospitality, and the power of journeys to inspire us and invite introspection.
Students are advised to read the text before the course begins. The preferred translation is by Robert Fagles.
