For this term, students will be exploring the short story form. The short story makes an ideal unit of study; firstly, because of size, we are able to easily identify the relationship between different writerly approaches and the effects they have on meaning and the reading experience. The short story is also the major creative/imaginative form that senior students will be asked to produce throughout their last years of schooling. Unfortunately, it is often not explicitly taught as an independent text type; schools tend to focus on longer novels, on suites of poems, and on play-texts, leaving students alone to translate the features of these quite different texts into their own shorter narratives. It is thus important for students to understand what a short story is, and to develop their own approaches to writing short narratives.
Throughout the term, students will be looking at a series of significant short stories. With these texts, they will study major approaches to the short story form, and important conceptual frameworks for understanding the short story. Through focused writing and reading activities, they will investigate various aspects of crafting narratives. Students will also have the chance to draft, write and edit their own short story, and to further develop their ability to write extended essays on questions and themes related to different short story texts.
