In Year 7 at Sydney Grammar School, Julius Caesar introduced me to many new worlds at once - to Shakespeare and his remarkable, rich history plays; to ancient Rome, politics and rhetoric; to the mercurial anxieties of the human condition. I find myself so excited now to be in a position to teach this wonderful play in a one-week holiday intensive. With its timeless speeches, Julius Caesar is a perfect introduction to Shakespearean language. Its relatable characters and plot of beautiful simplicity offer for students a well-trodden path to Shakespeare’s endless value. Pride leads to treachery and betrayal, which then turns to chaos, and then downfall. In this course, we will move from the motivations of each character to their political tactics in the Roman Senate, and experience together the poetic power of the unravelling and bloody civil war. In class, we will read, analyse and interpret key scenes, discuss themes of honour, loyalty and ambition, and of course, make sure to have fun with all this splendid stuff ------from Mr Milch
